Why The Cosy Desi Club started
On a train back to my hometown in the middle of the workday, I had three windows open. My emails, Teams, and then a blank Word doc. In a sudden burst of motivation, I very quickly filled that page with ideas, brainstorming every thing I could think of about creating the space I always wanted. Finally, the ideas I festered in my little brain was put onto paper 3 years later.
The Cosy Desi Club was once an unnamed project I drafted ideas about when I had a few spare hours, soon to be forgotten or convinced out of not going ahead with it. The pandemic came, focuses turned elsewhere, and then we were released back into the world. I realised I was left with nothing. It felt like the world, and everyone in it had moved on.
For the last few years, I followed and connected with so many amazing community groups and witnessed their growth, always too nervous or apprehensive to join in. I let myself feel like I wasn’t a part of it – I wasn’t social enough and networking scared me.
Funnily enough, an impromptu move pushed me out of the bubble I once knew and through a plethora of community groups, I got to know people from all walks of life and I found the connection I was missing. My idea of creating my own community group no longer felt so farfetched.
I also noticed that many of the brilliant organisations I connected with were based in or around London and I felt like the north was missing out on some of this, so here we are! TCDC is centred around desi voices, but this space is for everyone who is part of the Global Majority and allies. If you feel comfortable here, stay a while!
For transparency, I’m the kind of person who hated roundtables, peer feedback sessions, or standing in front of a crowd sharing my words but the urge to get involved and connect is always there. And so, The Cosy Desi Club is a space that is relaxed, no-pressure, but one that also encourages connection if you want it.
In the coming months, and hopefully the next few years, this space will be brimming with new and experienced creators alike, along with the thoughts of people who just want to say something. You can explore new ideas, have a chit-chat, read some book reviews or check some art out – and everything in between. There are no limits so watch this space <3
Lots of love,
